Stephen Large studied medicine at Guy’s Hospital, London. His interests in heart failure developed in Cambridge where he trained in and CT surgery was appointed to Papworth in 1989. He introduced arrhythmia surgery in 1993 and the National mechanical heart support programme in 2002. Interest in DCD heart donation began soon after. Early human work was performed in 2006 and the programme began in the UK 9 years later and work is underway towards a national DCD heart programme.
Current particular interest is the tolerance of the human myocardium to regional and global ischaemia and aortic intervention holding £2.2million of grant monies. He has 290 peer reviewed publications and after obtaining an MBA worked for NIHr and NICE and in education as sub-speciality dean for student doctor’s studies.
