Dr Hayden is Stuart S. Richardson Professor of Clinical Virology and Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. During 2006-2008 he served as a medical officer in the Global Influenza Programme at the World Health Organization, Geneva and during 2008-2012 as influenza research coordinator within International Activities at the Wellcome Trust, London. He continues to serve as consultant to WHO, Wellcome Trust, and other groups.
Dr Hayden graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1973 and completed his clinical training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at University of Rochester, New York. He joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1978 and became Richardson Professor in 1990. His principle research interests have been on respiratory viral infections with a particular focus on the development and application of antiviral agents for influenza and rhinovirus infections. He has published over 350 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and reviews, and co-edited the textbook Clinical Virology.
