Research Interests

  • Respiratory physiology
  • Diaphragm Electrical Activity (EAdi)
  • Neural control of mechanical ventilation
  • Patient-ventilator interaction
  • Lung protection
  • Extra-pulmonary dead space elimination for control of CO2 and pH during assisted ventilation.

Some achievements

  • Developing, validating and introducing computerized signal processing and analysis methods for EAdi (Am J Respir Crit Care Med. 2002; 166:518-624)
  • Inventing, developing, and introducing Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA) (Nature Med. 1999; 5: 1433-1436)
  • Introducing new chapters on neural monitoring of patient-ventilator interaction and NAVA in major clinical textbooks e.g. Principles and Practice and Principles of mechanical ventilation (editor M Tobin), Encyclopedia of Intensive Care Medicine (Eds J-L Vincent, JB Hall)
